Mozart – The Uncontainable Genius

Sculpture Installation by Ottmar Hörl
16 July – 31 August 2026, Mirabell Gardens Salzburg

This summer, 400 golden Mozart figures will take over Salzburg’s Mirabell Gardens. Created by conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl in collaboration with the International Mozarteum Foundation, the installation Mozart – The Uncontainable Genius celebrates the 270th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. Around 50 cm tall, the sculptures invite visitors to experience Mozart in a new and accessible way while engaging with art in public space.

Ottmar Hörl is considered one of Europe’s leading conceptual artists. His works make art accessible to a wide audience and connect art, society, and everyday life. With these Mozart figures, Hörl highlights Mozart’s personality, creativity, and lasting cultural influence.

The idea for this project has accompanied Hörl for many years. Inspired by Mozart’s music and his close connection to Salzburg, he developed an installation that presents Mozart not only as a musical genius, but also as a cultural icon. Special attention is given to Mozart’s love of nature and animals, reflected in the figure with a dog that forms part of the installation.
