Mozarthaus Vienna: New Special Exhibition
From Place of Pilgrimage to Museum – The History of the House
Mozart lived at Domgasse 5 from 1784 to 1787, composing major works here, including the opera Le nozze di Figaro. Known as the “Figaro House”, the building became a place of quiet veneration. Johannes Brahms campaigned for a commemorative plaque, which was not installed until nine years after his death.
In 1941, around 150 years after Mozart’s death, the house became a memorial site for the first time. The Mozarthaus Vienna opened in 2006. The new special exhibition traces the building’s journey from place of pilgrimage to museum. It explores its changing uses, residents and social significance, revealing how Mozart lived here amid the everyday bustle of Vienna, surrounded by neighbours, taverns and shops.
