“Mozart in the Vienna of Joseph II”
Friday, 25 September 2026 – 7:00 p.m.
Mozart arrived in Vienna in 1781, at a time when Joseph II had been sole ruler of the Habsburg monarchy since 1780. Joseph II represented enlightened absolutism and introduced numerous reforms, including abolishing serfdom on 1 November 1781. For Mozart, the Emperor’s cultural policies were particularly important: Joseph II commissioned works from him and also approved the premiere of Le Nozze di Figaro. This tour explores the influence of the Enlightenment on Mozart’s music and how the Emperor supported Mozart through his cultural policies.
